Professor - Dr. Dan Deines
Dr. Deines received his BA degree in History from Fort Hays State University, his Masters in Business from Emporia State University, and his Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Nebraska. He has been at Kansas State University since 1982 where he now holds the Ralph Crouch, KPMG Professorship in Accounting.
Dan is active in the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of CPAs, and the Kansas Society of CPA and the National Business Education Association. In 2003, he was elected President of the Kansas Society of CPAs and was the first academic to serve in this office. He is the co-author with Penne Ainsworth of the text “Introduction to Accounting: an integrated approach”. In 2007 he was awarded the AICPA’s Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education award. He is also a charter member (1962) of the Banner Road Hunt Club of Collyer, Kansas.
Professor - Dr. Kimberly Swanson Church
Dr. Church is part of the faculty at the University of Missouri Kansas City. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas (2010) and has a Master’s in Accountancy from Kansas State University (2002) and B.B.A. from Pittsburg State University (1998). She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate Accounting Information Systems and Managerial Accounting courses at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. She is actively involved in several accounting organizations: AAA, ISACA, IMA, and MSCPA.
Kim joined the APBP in 2013. She was a student of Dan’s for the first iteration of the provided curriculum, nearly two decades ago. She later returned to Kansas State for grad school where she taught the provided curriculum to undergraduate students. This is where she developed her love of teaching and never returned to a professional career in accounting. She brings her entrepreneurial experiences to the classroom to give accounting students a user perspective of the accounting information they learn.
Kim enjoys spending time with her husband Eric and two children Tanner and Kyndel on a family farm 2 hours south of Kansas City. She is currently part owner in a family business and has been a trust tax preparer for the Kansas State University Foundation and served as an entry level accountant in the commodities industry.
Teacher - Glenda Eichman
Ms. Eichman has been a business education teacher at Manhattan High School in Manhattan, Kansas for 22 years. She teaches Accounting I, College Accounting, Business and Personal Finance, and Business Management. She holds a B.S. in Business Education and a M.S. in Adult Education both from Kansas State University. She served on the Kansas State University Business Education Advisory Council.
Ms. Eichman was the catalyst that triggered The AP Accounting Project at Kansas State University. She came to KSU’s accounting department and raised the question: “If students can get college credit for computer classes taught at Manhattan High School why can’t they get credit for an accounting course.” Since that initial conversation, Ms. Eichman has been a key participant in The AP Accounting Project whose goal is to have the College Board adopt accounting as part of its Advanced Placement Curriculum. She helped design the curriculum for the college level accounting course that is now taught in high schools around the country, attended training to teach the class, has taught the pilot course since 2007, trains new teachers and advises teacher who are implementing the new curriculum for the first time.
In September 2009, Kansas State University’s Accounting Department awarded her the first annual “Bridge Award” which is given to recognize the efforts high school accounting educators who build bridges between high school and university accounting education and the accounting profession. She continues to champion in word and deed the adoption by The College Board of an AP Accounting Class. In the fall of 2009 Ms. Eichman was award the first Honorary Membership in the Kansas Society of CPAs for her efforts to advance the long-term well-being of the accounting profession.
Glenda and her husband Brent live in Wamego, Kansas and have three children Jameson, Lane, and Sydney. She spends most of her free time following her children’s sporting events.
Teacher - Joe Navickas
Joe has been a teacher at Deerfield High School in Deerfield, Illinois since 2002. He teaches Accounting, Investing, On-Line Consumer Economics, Entrepreneurship, and Introduction to Business. He is a sponsor for DECA. Joe has been a trainer for the Accounting Pilot & Bridge Project since 2009.
Joe earned a Bachelor’s in Business Education from Easter Illinois University in 1997. He received his Masters in Educational Leadership from National Louis University in 2009 and his Masters in Business Administration from Northeastern Illinois University in 2009.
Joe is married to Jenny Navickas and has three sons.
Teacher - Sean Crevier
Sean has been a teacher at Vernon Hills High School in Vernon Hills, Il since 2000. He teaches Accounting I, Accounting II, and Personal Finance. In addition to high school teaching, he is an adjunct accounting instructor at the College of Lake County. He holds a BS in Business Management from Purdue University, A Masters in Secondary Education from Roosevelt University, and a Masters in School Administration from Concordia University.
Sean is the FBLA adviser at Vernon Hills, the JV Boys' Golf Coach, and a Technology Curriculum Integration Coach. In 2009 Sean became involved in The Accounting Pilot and Bridge Project and has been teaching the college prep curriculum to juniors and seniors since the fall '09 semester. In the summer of 2010 he began training new teachers and advises teachers who are implementing the new curriculum.
Sean and his wife Carlynn live in Lindenhurst, Il with their two children Mitchell and Mallory.
Teacher - Janie Patterson
Janie has taught at Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson, Kansas since 1992. She teaches Accounting I, Honors Accounting for Business Operations, IB Information Technology in a Global Society, and 21st Century Skills. Janie is also a career development facilitator for Hutchinson High School and works with students to develop plans of study in Career and Technical Education. In 2000, she was honored as Educator of the Year in her school district. She holds a B.S. in Business Education and an M.S. In Secondary Education both from Kansas State University.
Janie's involvement with the pilot began in 2008 when she attended the summer training in Manhattan, KS. After teaching Accounting for close to 20 years, she was excited to see a new curriculum developed with more relevance and value to students majoring in Accounting. She started teaching the curriculum the following school year in 2009. She joined the training team the summer of 2010.
Janie and her husband David live in Hutchinson and have two boys, Joshua and Benjamin.
Teacher - Alison Nord
Alison graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and worked as a CPA in both public accounting and private industry for nine years. She then returned to Aquinas College to complete a Master’s in Education and has spent the last fourteen years teaching at Comstock High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She teaches Accounting I, College Accounting, Business Law, Business Management, and Personal Finance.
Alison has taught College Accounting for two years and is beginning her second year as a trainer for the Accounting Pilot & Bridge Project. She first met Dr. Deines several years ago when they served on a committee together to help write national accounting standards for the NBEA.
Alison resides in Portage, Michigan with her husband, Erik, and is the proud mother of two daughters, Erika and Andrea. My favorite past times are watching Erika play volleyball, watching Andrea play basketball, and vacationing to warm places where I can walk on the beach.
Yvonne Hinson, CPA, CGMA, Ph.D
Yvonne Hinson, CPA, CGMA, Ph.D. is currently the Academic in Residence with the AICPA; a newly created position to foster closer relationships with universities and faculty. She began her accounting career with Arthur Andersen in Charlotte, NC. After returning to the University of Tennessee to pursue her Ph.D., Yvonne accepted a position with Wake Forest University. During her 18.5 year career at WFU she served as a faculty member, Director of Graduate Studies, Director of Accountancy and Dean of Charlotte Programs. Yvonne has served on numerous academic and community committees and nonprofit Boards and is a past President of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy and past Chair of the AAA Membership Advisory Committee. Her research has been published in both academic and practitioner journals. She earned her undergraduate degree in accounting and MBA from UNC Charlotte.
Sonya Guthrie joined the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) in 2013 as Senior Manager of Next Generation Initiatives in the Student and Professional Pathways division. In her role, she develops innovative programs, products and services to attract gifted and talented high school students to the accounting profession by carrying out strategic initiatives and alliances. She also has the privilege of further empowering high school educators by developing supplemental resources to help make their jobs easier and engage students in the study of accounting. Through management of the Start Here, Go Places. brand, Sonya and her team provide a wealth of resources to arm educators with the tools needed to become accounting career advocates and fuel students with the necessary information to become future CPAs. Sonya’s role expanded in 2017 to Senior Manager of Academic and Student Awareness, leveraging her successes in the high school space to further promote programs, products and services to additional student and academic audiences. She was honored to receive the 2017 Outstanding Service Award from the Business Professionals of America organization for her long-standing commitment to student efforts.
Sonya graduated with honors from North Carolina State University with a BA in Communications and a minor in Journalism. Prior to joining NCACPA, she served as an Account Executive for such advertising agencies as Wunderman, Brann Worldwide, and Rockett Burkhead & Winslow. She specialized in direct marketing, general, and brand advertising for healthcare and technology clients.
Amy Merletti is the Project Manager for the Academic & Student Engagement team at the AICPA. Amy joined the AICPA in 2015 and is responsible for managing the Academic Champion program, Accounting Pilot & Bridge Project along with other Academic Initiatives. Prior to joining the AICPA, Amy worked in the marketing industry for a top accounting firm in Miami, FL. Her experience includes, marketing strategy, brand management, event execution and public and media relations. Amy received her bachelor’s degree from Florida Atlantic University in public communication with a minor in business hospitality and tourism management.
