“There was and always will be a demand for CPAs,” says Tim LaSpaluto, Controller at the AICPA. He should know – fresh off obtaining his Masters in Accounting from North Carolina State University, he got hired by Big Four accounting firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers. There he made it to Senior Manager in the assurance practice before leaving for his current job.

And he’s still in demand, even now: “My day is always busy,” he says. “In tough economic times like these, I am always being asked to do more with less.” And to do that, Tim says, he has to “think outside of the box.”

That’s fine by Tim. He was never much of a box guy to begin with. “Accountants are looked to as business advisors,” he says. “You can’t be stuck in a gray cubicle; you have to get out and communicate with business owners.”

So, he’s good at communication, too, and not just in the office. “I try to spend as much time as possible with my family,” he says. In the summer, he and his wife and their new daughter frequently head to the beach and enjoythe sun and water.

So in addition to constant demand, Tim’s appreciating some of the other fruits of CPA life, like flexibility and freedom. “I am never bored and I am constantly challenged,” he says. And he’s pretty sure the profession has room for you too.

“As a CPA,” he says, “you will be challenged and rewarded in so many ways. The sky is the limit.”
