Since he’s the son of a CPA, Randy Watkins probably had his career figured out from the very beginning, right?
Not really, he says. “My father never urged me to pursue accounting as a career, wanting me to make my own decisions.” In high school, as a matter of fact, Randy was planning to become an engineer. However, after taking and enjoying his first accounting class in high school, he began to wonder if he'd follow in Dad's footsteps after all.
Fast forward through earning a degree at the University of Northern Colorado, passing the CPA exam and starting his career the very next Monday, and pause at today: Randy merged his father's practice with Anton Collins Mitchell LLP—the firm that was formerly a BDO office, and where Randy' began his career.
So does he sit at Dad’s old desk each afternoon, contemplating whether all this was destined from the beginning? Hardly. “It’s rare that I’m even there,” he says. “As an auditor, I spend most of my time out of the office, interacting with clients’ employees and executives.”
“On any given day, I could be almost anywhere,” he sums up. But wherever he goes, it’s safe to say he’s got interesting work lined up – and a very proud father. His wife can relate to his work experiences as well – she’s a CPA herself! Now that’s keeping it in the family.
