Mike Turpin

Tax Supervisor
Dunbar, Cook & Shepard, P.C.
Noblesville, IN

For Mike Turpin, the thrill of each day comes in working behind the scenes at some of the best-run, most well-known companies around.

“As a CPA, you get to know what’s really going on behind a business. You know the owners, the business and the industry. It’s a view that not many people have.”

Mike’s path to becoming a CPA was anything but traditional. He worked in restaurants for eight years before returning to college to get a degree in accounting & finance. He gained 10 years of experience working in one of the 10 largest CPA firms in the country before moving to a local firm to use his expertise to assist closely held companies and their owners.

Mike loves the challenging nature of his work. “I love puzzles. And I look at a tax return like a big puzzle – a logic problem. I really enjoy what I do.”

Being a CPA gives Mike the freedom to explore lots of different pursuits. For starters, he’s the co-owner of a nightclub. “It may seem about as far from accounting as you can get,” he says, “but my accounting background is really important to make it a success.” He and his wife also follow the Indianapolis Colts to see their games on the road.

“Becoming a CPA has afforded me lots of opportunities I never would have had otherwise,” Mike says. “My advice? Keep your eyes on the long-term prize, but make sure you take the time to enjoy every day.”
