Assistant Comptroller
Lee County, MS

Maybe it’s just his southern surroundings talking, but Michael Martin is one laid-back dude. After more than a decade at public accounting firms, he went to work in Lee County, Mississippi (population 81,913) and hasn’t looked back.
“Life moves at a much slower pace now,” he says. “While we still have deadlines, the stress level has decreased significantly.” In addition, he likes the great benefits and job security of having a government position. “I love my coworkers,” he adds. “And I get satisfaction out of working for the taxpayers here.”
It’s not all porch sitting and sweet tea, though. “My teenage son keep me very busy,” Michael says. They also make time to go to college football games and concerts when they can. Plus, he volunteers with the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
Seems like a pretty well-rounded life, don’t you think? Michael thanks his education for making it possible. “The CPA certificate is the door to an endless number of opportunities,” he says. “It can take you anywhere you want to go.”
It’s certainly led him to a nice place. If you’re pointed the same way, he even offers some traveling advice. “Take the time to enjoy yourself. The Real World comes soon enough. Just enjoy your life.”
