Mehrunnisa Khan got into accounting, specifically auditing, because she thought it was a better fit for what she calls her “assertive personality.” That personality comes through when she talks about why she loves her career in public accounting: “Becoming a CPA has more than one benefit. It’s a rewarding career, both monetarily and qualitatively. After college, you’re guaranteed a job. It’s a fast track career as well. By the time you hit 30, you will, more likely than not, be a manager.”
She’s seeing those very benefits herself now, finding success and enjoying what she does. “I love the social aspect of my job in particular,” she says. “I’m always networking, whether it be an internal firm event or with client personnel. Every day brings something new to the table. I never get bored.”
And you can see why she’s never bored. Mehrunnisa’s day at work consists of planning, supervising and performing all the phases in the audits for her clients, managing relationships with clients, researching issues that come up and performing reviews of financial statements, just to name a little bit.
It helps that she likes who she works with. Mehrunnisa and her team regularly share jokes, funny emails and “pick on each other.” After work, she soaks up a different kind of fun –rafting, parasailing and scuba diving.
And it’s all been made possible because she knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to go after it. She doesn’t hesitate to recommend it to others, either. “A career as a CPA is very interesting and has many specialties to offer,” she asserts. “You can choose what you like best.”
