Mark Wilson was not a very good engineering student.
So it was a good thing for him that one of his professors noticed his skills for accounting. “I was encouraged by a kind accounting professor who noticed a skill in me,” he says.
Since graduating from college, Mark has worked for a large public accounting firm, was an assistant professor at Baylor University, worked in auditing for a couple Fortune 500 companies and now does just about everything his current employer needs in the realm of Corporate Finance.
The depth of knowledge and experience Mark has gained has shaped him into the professional he is today. And when asked what a ‘normal’ day is, Mark says it includes listening to fun music, playing a guitar or mandolin with friends and helping his company grow and meet its goals. Not too bad.
According to Mark, CPAs have a unique perspective at the center of a business.”Because our job gives us insight into all facets of the enterprise,” he says “That perspective gives us a great position to be counselors to leadership as they guide the organization in pursuit of its goals.”
From Mark’s perspective, it’s a simple equation: “When the company succeeds we all succeed.”
Although he says that being a CPA isn’t just about keeping score, when asked to describe what CPAs do only in three words Mark replied, “Help others win!”
