Mark Germain decided to go into accounting because he wanted “to understand the economics of businesses,” and his wish has definitely been granted.

“The knowledge you get in your first three years as a CPA is invaluable,” he says. “It gives you a platform to lots of business opportunities.” Since entering public accounting, he’s gotten involved in networking activities, and really likes the continuous client involvement on both work and social levels. “A CPA is not a bean counter, but a business advisor.”

He’s also on the Board of Directors for three local not-for-profit organizations, and meets with those groups both during and outside of work hours, which makes for a great networking opportunity, he says. “Every day offers new challenges,” Mark reports. “I can honestly say I never get bored.” Mark was even honored as one of the Business West 40 Under Forty for the class of 2011.

If you have similar goals, and really want to understand businesses well enough to advise them, then Mark has some advice: “Wherever your career takes you, having the foundation of a CPA career on your resume will be beneficial.”
