For Jason Deshayes, a career in accounting all began with an error. “I took an accounting class in high school because of a scheduling mix up,” he says. “But once I got in, it clicked.”

What happened after that was no mistake. Jason worked in all types of jobs throughout high school and college – some related to accounting, and others (like being a resident advisor in the dorms, or working at a movie theater) not as obviously connected to the field. Every step of the way, he gravitated toward accounting.

As a CPA, he’s continued his search to find the right niche for his career. “I started at a large firm my senior year of college, and after a few years I realized I wanted more contact with clients,” he says. “So I moved to a firm with only forty people. From there, I moved to a company with only one other person. I eventually want to have my own practice, and this is the right path for me to get there.”

Today, Jason loves staying in close contact with his clients. “I talk to my clients about everything from new businesses they’re starting to kids they’re having,” he says. “Can you think of another career where that would happen?”
