Glenda Hicks wanted to be a CPA even before she knew what it was. How’s that? In tenth grade, her older sister, who was in college, told her about a friend who really liked her accounting class. So Glenda took a bookkeeping class. Then she joined the local Future Business Leaders of America group and began competing in local business competitions. “I won first place in accounting,” she recalls. “That solidified my career path!”

Glenda went on to pursue accounting in college, where “I knew that being a CPA was the highest level of achievement in the profession,” Glenda says. “So I wanted it – even before I really knew what it was.”

Today Glenda runs her own CPA business, and uses her job as an outlet for pursuing her passion of empowering women. She offers professional development workshops for women, as well as all types of training in the areas of not-for-profit accounting, personal development, and board development, to name a few. “I’m also the leader of my daughter’s girl scout troop,” she says, “and I speak to high school students about careers in accounting.”

What does Glenda enjoy about her job? “I love the impact I have on others,” she says. “My clients in nonprofit organizations express such a deep appreciation for what I do for them as a CPA. And when the women attending my workshops have ‘aha’ moments, it’s extremely gratifying.”

While Glenda may not have known what a CPA did when she started down the path of accounting, she is living proof that it can be anything you want it to be. Sounds like Glenda has had plenty of “aha” moments along the way.
