Director of Accounting
Healthcare System at Catholic Medical Center
Manchester, NH
Although he didn’t decide to major in accounting until his sophomore year of college, Eric Walker knew his skill set was a good fit for the profession. After all, “I enjoyed statistics class as well as well as basic accounting,” he says.
After finishing his undergraduate studies, Eric landed a job with a small accounting firm.
Then he “chose the hard road,” as he puts it. He worked in public accounting, gaining professional experience, while simultaneously earning his masters degree. “I learned to become very organized with my time and activities by planning out every day,” he says.
Now Eric works for the Healthcare System at Catholic Medical Center, where he says there are always a dozen different projects taking him in a dozen different directions. “Every day is different from the next and brings new challenges,” he says.
“Being a nerdy human calculator does not cut it,” he says. “Auditors need to be very social and be able to ask questions of others to perform their work” According to Eric, auditing is about solving problems, helping client’s improve, networking and continually learning new skills.
Eric says that being a CPA has been challenging and rewarding, and there is one thing he knows for sure about being a CPA: “The profession will always be in demand and will provide you with sought after skills.”
