There are some people who probably plan to work until retirement, then relax and play golf. But Ed Dupke did just the opposite.
He started college as an engineering student at General Motors Institute, but eventually decided engineering wasn’t for him, and left college to become a professional golfer. After three years on the tour, Ed ultimately decided on a career in accounting and finance. He enrolled at Wayne State as finance major and accounting minor, and never looked back.
Ed has enjoyed a long and successful career in public accounting. He has worked at several well-known accounting firms, co-authored a finance book, volunteered countless hours as a business coach and has even racked up a few awards.
Ed finally retired in 2005, but he couldn’t stay away. Not long after his retirement, he was offered a position at Clifton Gunderson LLP, and accepted their offer. “I said at the time l would work as long as it is fun. And I am still here.”
While he still enjoys playing golf in his spare time, Ed loves the variety that accounting brings every day. “Our practice is anything but dull and boring,” he said. “Each day brings a new challenge and new opportunity. The challenge is to apply the skills your training has brought you in the most effective manner for the case.”
Unlike the rest of us, Ed seems to have found the perfect balance between birdies and business.
