Doug Bowman

Senior Technical Manager
AICPA (that's us)
Durham, NC

Doug Bowman looks at his career as a CPA as an adventure and describes it as “a winding road wrought with successes and failures but always headed to promising destinations.”

Despite the stereotypical portrayal of CPAs in movies and TV shows, accountants are business people, not unlike most other business professionals. “Today's business professionals have to be well-rounded and able to work in team environments,” Doug says. “So our roles are very different today than the very narrow, task-oriented roles that handcuffed the CPAs of yesteryear.”

In his current role, Doug works as a technical manager of Accounting & Auditing Publications at the American Institute of CPAs. Doug must handle cross-functional duties that expose him to a variety of challenges, so he’s “rarely in a routine.”

Doug believes that becoming a CPA opens a lot of doors and qualifies you for an array of career paths. “You're very likely to find a niche that you enjoy,” he adds.

And when he’s not at work, Doug is most likely doing something outside with his family, such as riding a bike or Jet Ski. Although, he has also been known to put his CPA skills to work by helping his parents with their business.
