Demetria Wade

Accounting Manager
Loehmann's
Mount Vernon, NY

“I almost let my first chance to become a CPA slip away,” says Demetria Wade. It’s no wonder, at the time she was juggling a new role as a mom in addition to preparing for the exam. “I passed two parts of the CPA exam and had two more to go, but I wasn’t intent on studying.” But a friend and fellow accountant encouraged her to sign up for a review course and enlist the baby-sitting help of family members to make it work. “Once I decided to put in the time and effort,” she says, “I stuck to my plan and passed the remaining parts.” And she’s glad she did.

Today Demetria starts her day by preparing her girls’ lunches and diaper bags, dropping them off and heading to work. As an accounting manager for Loehmann’s, the large chain of department stores, she spends most of her time analyzing, tracking and reporting all kinds of financial matter. In the process, she stays in constant contact with people in other departments.

Along the way, Demetria has learned the value of taking on challenges that may seem overwhelming at the time. “Try something that’s a challenge,” she says. “Don’t just play to your strengths. Embrace your weaknesses and turn them into something positive.”

And Demetria has done just that. She knows that those three letters behind her name mean a lot. “The CPA path is the way to go because it’s prestigious. People know that it's a great achievement, and it opens doors.”
