David Morgan took a junior-high aptitude test that suggested he go into accounting and wound up in the the corner office as president of a 400-person accounting firm. He’s had the kind of successful career they write about in books. In fact, he’s accomplished so much, and gained so many wise and helpful insights along the way, that he’d like to share his words of advice with others.

On accounting: “I thought it was about math, but it’s more about English. Understanding the numbers is the first level, but to go to the next level you must understand how to interpret the numbers and explain what they mean.”

On career options: “Accounting is the language of business. If you can speak the language, you can be successful not only in accounting, but in most any other career you choose.”

On potential: “I came from a very humble working class family. I had great parents that supported me in all the ways that they could, but I had to make it on my own. My accounting training put me in the position to achieve both great financial and personal success. You don’t have to come from a family of successful professionals or from great wealth.”

And lastly, on pursuing life to the fullest: “When I developed an interest in wine, I studied about wine, traveled to wineries, met wine makers and winery owners and learned how to enjoy drinking great wine.” (He’s also done so in California, France and Italy.)
