Dave Andrews graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, but didn’t go straight into a career in accounting.
After graduating from St. Norbert College in Wisconsin, Dave was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Army through the ROTC. “While in the Army, I was stationed in Germany and Ft. Bragg with the 82nd Airborne Division,” he says.
Nearly seven years after joining the Army, Dave decided to go back to school to become a CPA. “A family member had worked for several years in public accounting and convinced me that it was a great way to learn about business,” Dave says. He enrolled in graduate school at the University of Notre Dame, where he completed his MBA.
Dave immediately began working at a Big Four public accounting firm, where he remained for almost 12 years. When he was ready for a change, Dave became a controller for a startup company. After a couple of years there, he returned to public accounting.
Now Dave works at the American Institute of CPAs as a Technical Manager. “I get to work with smart people and am challenged every day,” he says.
Though it took Dave a while to become a CPA, he knows it was the right choice. “Earning and maintaining the CPA credential tells others that you have a strong work ethic and that you have a knowledge base that exceeds the ordinary,” he says. “You will also have career opportunities that you would not otherwise have had.”
