Talk to a CPA. Corey Arvizu did and now he’s one too.
“I had some great discussions with a friend in the profession who provided wonderful insight as to how there might be more to a career in accounting than I may have anticipated,” Corey says. “He also provided encouragement and support throughout my education, job search and during the initial stages of my career.”
Corey worked full time through college to earn his bachelor’s of accountancy degree from Arizona State University. After school, interviewed with several companies, and even considered going into the military. As luck would have it, one of the interviews was with a local firm: Heinfeld, Meech & Co. “The enthusiasm of those in the firm, the career opportunities, and a clear commitment and respect for the firm’s clients were the primary factors why I selected Heinfeld, Meech & Co.”
He’s been there ever since. “I started as a staff auditor with the firm and through the great guidance and support I received from colleagues, supervisors and partners I was able to progress through all levels of the firm to partner,” he says.
For students who may not be sure about their future, Corey offers three steps to make it clearer. “First, just be open to the idea of being a CPA – don’t miss a wonderful career opportunity because of what you may have heard from others about being a CPA. Second, talk to those who are CPAs – you will be surprised. Third, there is a place for you in the CPA profession – the profession thrives on diverse skill sets, personalities, backgrounds and experiences.”
So take some advice from Corey. After all, one conversation shaped his professional life – it might just do the same for you. “There are many people in your life with wonderful ideas, knowledge, and experiences – be willing to share moments with these individuals.”
