Carter Heim

President / CEO
HeimLantz, Professional Corporation
Annapolis, MD

Carter Heim knew he wanted to be an electrical engineer. So he went to college and graduated with a degree in accounting. Sounds reasonable, right?

It was a lecture from Carter’s first accounting professor that changed his career path. “He painted a picture of public accounting that resonated for me and inspired me,” Carter says. “I've never regretted my decision.”

According to Carter, the CPA opens the door to opportunity – for fun, high earnings, challenges, travel and helping others. “In becoming a CPA, you acquire skills and knowledge that are transferable to many other professions and jobs,” he says. “The CPA can be a major asset as you pursue your path to success, however you define success.”

Carter had big plans: Become a partner of a CPA firm by age 30. And he did – with a year to spare. During his next 32 years as a CPA, Carter’s job has evolved and changed from tax and auditing to tax planning, business planning and, most recently, litigation support and business valuation. “Accounting is a fantastic profession where opportunities abound,” he says. “Every day is different. It's a career where you can continually grow and learn.”

It’s not all work in Carter’s world. He’s also passionate about hiking, skiing, biking and traveling – to China, the United Kingdom and U.S. National Parks. He and his wife hiked across a England, from the Irish Sea to the North Sea in 2011. The hike was 130 miles and took 11 days. “I have fun every day, at work and in personal time,” he says. “I never wish I were doing something different for my profession.”
