Think you’re too outgoing to become an accountant? Bill Heinrich would disagree. And since he’s a CPA, Bill knows.
“Communication skills are vitally important,” Bill says. He’s found that with each promotion, his responsibilities have shifted from a strong technical focus to much more emphasis on interaction with clients or co-workers.
Bill earned an accounting degree from Marquette University and started his career straight out of school. He’s worked his way up throughout the years and is now a shareholder at a regional accounting firm, which keeps him on his toes.
“Work is constantly changing due to the evolution of professional standards, the economy, client needs and expectations as well as internal firm directions and focus,” Bill says. “In any given month, I work with a variety of clients, dealing with compliance matters, as well as responding to client’s accounting and business issues and problems as they arise.”
But it isn’t all work and no play. “I like to have fun while I work,” Bill says. “I have been known to add a bit of comedy in the workplace and have participated in a few interoffice practical jokes over the years.”
And if you can’t find him joking around the office, check the bowling alley or golf course. Bill participates in a client-sponsored bowling league during the year and spends any extra time in the summer playing golf.
So if you’re looking for a career where you get to chat with clients or employees most of the day, remember Bill’s words of advice about accounting: “Communication and social skills can be as important as technical skills and competency.”
