Technical Manager - Professional Ethics
AICPA (that’s us)
Durham, NC
Ethics are more important than ever in the business world. And when it comes to ethics in accounting, April Sherman knows her stuff – today she’s a technical manager for the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). “I offer help regarding our code of professional conduct, enforce the AICPA’s ethics standards, and work with our committees to create or revise additional guidance,” she says. “I don’t count anything.”
One of April’s many responsibilities involves answering calls directly from CPAs when they get stumped with an ethical question. When that happens, they call a hotline that connects them with April, who offers insight and information. “Verbal and written communication are key in my day,” April says. “And I do a lot of reading and research for enforcement purposes.”
It’s a far cry from her previous job as an auditor with a large international firm, but April loves her current job. “I can complete so much work without sacrificing the work-life balance.” When April’s not working, she loves to volunteer and is an active member of her church. She’s especially dedicated to helping students see the benefits of a career in accounting – she works with the AICPA's Durham Public Schools Business & Finance Academy initiative and the local student chapters of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).
Most of all, April knows that what she does every day makes a difference. “I help our members and the public every day. Most of all, my work matters to others.”
