The first African American CPA was John Wesley Cromwell, Jr., licensed in 1921. He had to sit for the exam in New Hampshire as many states, including his native state, Washington DC made it impossible for African Americans to obtain certification. John went on to great success, becoming the controller of Howard University in 1930.
