In High School

Will German grammar and chem labs mean anything to your career?

Actually, yes. Pretty much everything you do in high school (academically speaking, that is) touches on a skill that will help you on the road to CPA-hood. So keep doing what you’re doing and when you can, check these things off your to-do list:

Big Things to Do

  • Do a thorough college search for schools with strong business schools and accounting programs.
  • Conduct a scholarship search to help you pay for that strong business school.

Not As Big But Still Important Things to Do

  • Focus on becoming well-rounded. Volunteer, play a sport or instrument, start your own mini business or whatever impressive thing you can think to do with your free time.
  • Read a lot and write a lot. CPAs cannot be robots when it comes to communication.
  • If possible, take any general business classes offered or an introductory course to accounting, so you know the basics before you even move into your college dorm.
  • Begin reading business magazines and newspapers including Forbes, Business Week, or The Wall Street Journal. You’ll be an instant smartypants.
